Jordan
Greece has an Embassy in Amman, while Jordan has an Embassy in Athens and an Honorary Consulate in Thessaloniki.
Political Relations
Greece and Jordan subscribe to the same policy of good neighbourliness in the sensitive region of the Middle East, and share a belief in the rule of international law and the need to seek peaceful solutions to disputes on the basis of UN resolutions.
The two countries share a long history of harmonious cooperation on the bilateral level, on the multilateral level in the framework of the UN, in the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership with the EU, and in NATO. Moreover, Greece’s firm stance in favour of a just, comprehensive and permanent solution to the Middle East problem – which is a major issue in Jordanian foreign policy, for geographical reasons and due to the large number of Jordanians of Palestinian origin residing in Jordan – contributes to maintaining the friendly relations between the two countries.
Cultural Relations and Greek Community
There are some 500 Greeks living in Jordan, most of whom are Greek women married to Jordanian nationals who, in many cases, have studied at Greek educational institutions. There are about 15 Greek families in which both are Greek. The Jerusalem Patriarchate has founded an Arabic-language Greek Orthodox school, top graduates of which are awarded scholarships for further studies in Greece.
The main Greek association is the “Association of Greek Women of Jordan”, which is active in the social and cultural sectors. A Parent-Teacher Association has been set up to support the Greek community school and promote the teaching of Greek language and culture to young Greeks, who are active through the “Association of Greek Youth of Jordan”.
The Greek Orthodox faithful in Jordan are estimated at some 120,000, most of whom are Arabic speaking. There are currently 29 Greek Orthodox churches – with that number on the increase – which come under the Jerusalem Patriarchate (seat: Metropolis of Philadelphia, Amman).
