Foreign Ministry announcement on violation of the rights of members of the Greek National Minority in Albania

Tuesday, 01 November 2016

The Albanian Authorities cannot contend, urbi et orbi, that minority rights are respected throughout Albanian territory when they are violating those rights in practice, thus obstructing the country’s European course.

The facts speak for themselves: The notices of demolition of buildings, within the framework of the redevelopment of Himara, were sent only to persons of Greek origin. This arrangement leads to the conclusion that there is a plan for infringement of the Greek minority’s rights.

The relevant statements made yesterday by Albanian officials draw on outdated arguments that are in direct opposition to the standards in effect in modern democratic and European states for protection of minority rights.

The Albanian leadership is confusing its misperception of history with Albania’s commitments, deriving from international law and the European acquis, regarding the protection of the Greek National Minority, which is indigenous and has established rights.
