Foreign Minister Droutsas to participate in the Abu Dhabi meeting of the Libya Contact Group

Foreign Minster Dimitris Droutsas participated on Thursday, 9 June, in the third meeting of the Contact Group on Libya, which took place in Abu Dhabi.

Mr. Droutsas set out Greece’s positions at the meeting, stressing Greece’s contribution so far in terms of humanitarian aid. Noting the role played by Crete in the evacuation of foreign nationals, he also briefed his colleagues on the recent shipment of humanitarian aid to Benghazi on a Greek vessel, as well as the presence there of a Greek mobile medical unit.

Mr. Droutsas also briefed the Group on the presence in Benghazi of the Greek Foreign Ministry team, whose purpose is to liaise with the Libyan Transitional National Council (TNC) and identify humanitarian needs and shortages that need to be covered when the reconstruction phase begins in Libya.

“We need to be ready for the day after,” Mr. Droutsas said, emphasizing the need to find a political solution to the crisis, in tandem with maintaining intensive military pressure on the regime in Tripoli. In this context, he praised the role of the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy to Libya, who has undertaken the coordination of the political efforts being made in this direction.
