Alternate FM Chountis’ statement following his meeting with Romanian Secretary of State for European Affairs George Ciamba
Alternate Foreign Minister Nikos Chountis made the following statement after his meeting with Romanian Secretary of State of European Affairs George Ciamba:
“We had a very interesting talk with Secretary Ciamba. Let me remind you that he was the Romanian Ambassador to Greece for years, so he is familiar with the Greek reality. This made the agenda for the talks easier, allowing us to discuss current issues of concern to Greece and Romania.
I want to say that we will follow up on the meeting with Mr. Ciamba, as with the meetings with my other colleagues, Ministers and Ambassadors. The new Greek government feels the need to keep its European partners informed – whether they are in the Eurozone or not – regarding the problems we are facing and our policy.
Secretary Ciamba and I discussed the fact that, provided this agreement promotes a beneficial solution for Greece and Europe, this will also be good for the economies of other countries, like Romania, and it will be also be good for confronting a number of problems on the regional level, such as the issue of youth unemployment and the issue of the development process, to the benefit of both countries and of the wider region.
We had the opportunity to express, once again, Greece’s support for Romania’s accession to the Schengen Treaty space, and, at the same time, Greece’s will to continue our good cooperation with the countries of Southeast Europe, including on a trilateral level, with Bulgaria.
A multilateral meeting took place recently in Tirana, where we reconfirmed that there is still a great deal of room for the improvement of our bilateral relations in the coming time. So we agreed to also work practically for the promotion of such forms of cooperation. A commitment to future cooperation means that we will be communicating more frequently with the Romanian government, on all levels, to move ahead on all of this.”
