Celebration of the National Day of Greece with a Byzantine flavour (3/25/2013)
The National Day of Greece was celebrated at the Consular residence, with the presence of 250 guests, including the Dean and many members of the Consular Corps, Governor Michael Dukakis, the CEO of LA Chamber of Commerce, Garry Toeben, the President of the World Affairs Council, Terry Mc Carthy, as well as representatives of the Getty Museum, University Faculty members, businessmen, film industry people, representatives of Greek-American Organizations etc.
This year’s celebration had a byzantine flavor, as it was dedicated to the future exhibition “Heaven and Earth: Art of Byzantium form Greek Collections”, which is being organized by the Greek general Secretariat of Culture and the Benaki Museum and will be hosted by the Getty Villa and the Getty Centre from April 7, 2014. The curator of the Exhibition, Dr Mary Louise Hart, referred to the concept of the exhibition as well as the participation of many museums from all over Greece, with treasures which have not seen before outside Greece. An array of events, such as a symposium, a concert of Byzantine music, a Byzantine gastronomy night and more, will take place the days of the exhibition, celebrating Greece’s culture in California.
The attendees enjoyed byzantine hymns performed by two byzantine cantors, Helene Palaiologos and Mario Lazarides, and a byzantine menu, prepared by the Consulate.
