Journalist: Mr. Erdogan mentioned mistakes with regard to the historical stance of Turkey on minorities. How would you characterize this statement?
Ms. Bakoyannis: I think it is a courageous statement. As you know, respect for minorities and real protection for their rights is a major European prerequisite for all of the countries that want to join the European family at some point. As a firm supporter of Turkey’s European adaptation, Greece obviously welcomes such statements, which indicate Turkey’s determination to stay on the path to Europe; the path of steady adaptation of its conduct – both at home and abroad – to European principles and values. Of course, it is equally obvious that actions speak louder than words. And Turkey’s course towards Europe is being assessed and monitored constantly, based on its actions.
Journalist: Ahead of the new effort expected from Nimetz some time in June, is there anything in Skopje policy that makes you more or less optimistic this time?
Ms. Bakoyannis: It is true that following the important decisions of the NATO summit in Bucharest, the issue has stagnated due to the intransigent stance of those governing in Skopje. Greece and the international community – our allies and partners – have sent them a clear message of understanding and cooperation; a message that calls upon them to contribute to reaching a mutually acceptable solution on the name issue and move ahead – as is their people’s desire – towards a European and Euroatlantic future of security and development. But in this future, there is no room for intransigence, the forging of history or actions and rhetoric that cause tensions. I really hope that in the discussion we will have soon under Mr. Nimetz, they will see that they cannot deprive their people of this future and will abandon their inflexible stance. We remain in these negotiations with optimism and determination. We are seeking a solution based on a compound name, with a geographical qualifier, that will be used by everyone (erga omnes), and we are doing so with the same self-confidence and the same clear positions.
