STATEMENTS BY GREEK GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES REGARDING THE CHANIA SYNAGOGUE ARSON ATTACK
Greece’s political leadership, including the Government spokesman, the Minister of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights, as well as the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, has unequivocally condemned the arson attack against a synagogue in Hania, Crete, as an act of hatred and intolerance, inconsistent with the sentiments of the Greek people and a state governed by the rule of law.
In their statements, Greek government officials emphasized that Greece respects and defends the rights of all people, regardless of race, religion, origin or gender. They also expressed their support to the members of the Jewish community, strongly condemning this act of violence and the damages it caused, including the destruction of 2,500 rare books, which constitute an integral part of Greece’s cultural heritage.
Greek authorities are taking all necessary security measures and are determined to bring the perpetrators to justice.
