I. Diplomatic Relations
There is mutual representation at Embassy level. Lithuania has maintained an Embassy in Greece since 1997. Greece has had an Embassy in Vilnius since 1/2/2005.
II. Framework of Treaties
Cooperation agreements have been signed between the two countries in the areas of investment protection, culture, tourism, economic, industrial and technological cooperation, road and sea transport, mutual elimination of visas, re-admission of persons, protection of confidential information, as well as cooperation on issues under the remit of the Greek Ministry of Public Order and the Lithuanian Ministry of the Interior.
III. Political relations
The two countries are partners in the EU and allies in NATO, and maintain active political relations, enjoying a good level of cooperation in International Organizations. The two countries resumed their diplomatic relations on 7/1/1992, with Greece supporting Lithuanias efforts to join Euro-Atlantic institutions.
The Foreign Minister of Lithuania Mr. . Vaitiekunas, carried out a visit to Greece and met with Minister Ms. D. Bakoyannis on 2 July 2007. The Prime Minister of Lithuania Mr. Kirkilas carried out a visit to Athens on 28-29 September 2008 and met with Prime Minister Mr. Kostas Karamanlis.
IV. Educational/Cultural Relations
During the state visit by the then Lithuanian President to Athens (February 1997), a Cultural Agreement was signed by the Foreign Ministers of the two countries. There is a Faculty of Classical Philology at the University of Vilnius. This faculty also has a non-institutionalised Greek language teaching department (in the form of additional teaching hours). Within the framework of the Greek Cultural Center, there is also a Greek-language teaching center with a three-year programme of Greek-language teaching, from which 55 Lithuanians graduated in 2006.
V. The Greek community
Greeks in Lithuania (estimated at some 250), are there as a result of mixed marriages and internal migration within the former USSR. There is an Association known as the Fatherland Association of Greeks in Lithuania.
