I. Diplomatic relations
There is Embassy level representation in Athens and Luxembourg.
II. Political relations
The President of the Hellenic Republic paid an official visit to the Grand Duchy from 10 to 12/7/2001. This was the first official visit by a head-of-state to Luxembourg after Grand Duke Henris accession to the throne.
III. Economic and Trade relations
The trade balance between the two countries shows a consistent deficit for Greece. The volume of trade has been steadily growing over the past few years. For 2003, Greek imports from Luxembourg amounted to 29.699m euros with exports at 2.846m euros. Greek imports consist of base metals, plastics, audiovisual equipment, iron ingots, silicon and magnetic cassettes, whilst our exports consist mainly of food, fruit, and textile goods.
IV. Cultural relations
Cultural relations between Greece and Luxembourg are covered by the 1990 Cultural Agreement, which is implemented through three-yearly cultural programmes. The most recent Cultural Programme was signed on 6/07/2001.
V. The Greek Community
The Greek community in Luxembourg, which consists of 2000 people, is composed overwhelmingly of officials working in various European bodies, and a growing number of executives employed by Greek corporations.
For fifty years now Luxembourg has been the seat of an active philhellene association known as Les amis de la Grce, as well as of the Calliope association.
