Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, I. Amanatidis, meets with a delegation of the American Jewish Committee and the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (6 September 2017)
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ioannis Amanatidis, met with the Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), David Harris, and the Director of the AJC's office in Israel, Avital Leibovich. The AJC delegation was accompanied by the President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS), David Saltiel, and KIS's First Vice President, Benjamin Albalas.
The talks were carried out in a very friendly climate and focused on the steadily growing bilateral relations between Greece and the U.S. and Greece and Israel, highlighting the shared will to fight anti-Semitism and intolerance.
The importance of the trilateral cooperation between Greece, Israel and Cyprus – which is proving beneficial for the three countries while also promoting Greece's role as a pillar of stability in the regional environment – was ascertained.
Mr. Amanatidis briefed his interlocutors on issues of particular interest to the AJC, including the upcoming Greek Exhibit at the Holocaust Museum in Auschwitz and the repatriation of the Archives of the Jewish community of Thessaloniki. In addition, Special Secretary for Religious and Cultural Diplomacy, Efstathios Liantis-Lianos, briefed the interlocutors on the process of adoption, by the Hellenic Parliament, of the official definition of anti-Semitism promoted by the AJC.The founding of an Intercultural and Interfaith Dialogue Centre in Thessaloniki and the hosting of a forum for Greek and Israeli youth organizations and other subjects of interest, which include entrepreneurship and innovation, were also discussed.
