\"I express my
\ndeep sorrow and grief for the loss of Pavlos Physsas\u2019s life, our 34 year old
\nfellow citizen. I am deeply shocked and saddened by this and I fully understand
\nthe seriousness of the circumstances. For this reason I have cancelled my
\nmeeting in Rome tomorrow with my Italian counterpart.<\/span><\/p>\n

The recent
\ndisgraceful and unacceptable events in Meligala, yesterday\u2019s attempted insult against
\nthe parliament and the grisly murder of Pavlos Physsas by an adjacent to the
\nGolden Dawn, as he has already admitted, <\/span>demonstrate in the clearest way the intentions of the neo-Nazi group.<\/span><\/p>\n

I declare that
\nthe Greek Republic is not going to remain passive vis a vis the unacceptable
\nchallenge of the Rule of Law that this murder, along with the other recent
\nevents, entails. <\/span>The Greek Police have
\nalready arrested the perpetrator of the murder and are currently conducting
\nextensive investigations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, in the
\nnext few days, we bring for public debate a proposal for a legislative
\ninitiative, aiming at a broader redefinition of Article 187 of the Penal Code
\non criminal association and of Article 195 of the Penal Code defining what
\nconstitutes formation of an armed group.<\/span><\/p>\n

I take this
\nopportunity to urge all those who believe that the terms of expression of civil
\nand political rights and political dialogue are cornerstones of a democratic
\ncountry; all those whose sense of perception, historical memory and expectations
\nfor the future of Greece abhor acts and theories, which are based on the logic
\nof discrimination, oppression, fascism <\/span>and racism, which are further manifested with insults, derogatory
\naccusations, attacks, by use of force and unfortunately by killing innocent
\ncivilians .<\/span><\/p>\n

I urge all
\ndemocratic political forces, but also all our fellow citizens who care and are
\nanxious about the present and the future of the country and our society, for
\nthe wellbeing and the future of our children, to jointly decide in a definite
\nmanner that neither our state would tolerate nor our society would accept acts
\nand practices which directly undermine our democratic institutions and
\nintroduce underworld behaviors in our political life. We should all agree on a
\nmutually acceptable framework of political and public behavior, in which
\ndialogue would be dominating along with understanding and direct and outright
\nrepudiation of any brutal and undemocratic acts.<\/span><\/p>\n

We should
\nfinally stand together with our history as a guide <\/span>and consider whether the characteristics of a
\ncertain political formation in our country today is identifiable with the ideas
\nof certain constructs of the past in Germany and Italy; if the military-style
\nstructure we have seen in Meligala refers to the logic of violence,
\ndiscrimination and the fascist worldview and, finally, to the times when the
\nblack attire and Nazi and fascist violence left deep and painful imprints in
\nthe soul of Greek society.\"<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
