Discussion on the contribution of the Vertical Corridor to NATO’s Eastern Flank

A discussion on the contribution of the Vertical Corridor to military mobility and energy security on NATO’s Eastern Flank was organised by the Permanent Representation of Greece to NATO on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, at the Residence of the Permanent Representative, Ambassador Vasiliki Gounari, in Brussels.

Key speakers included the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the Permanent Representative of the United States to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, and the NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defence Policy and Planning, Nick Catsaras. Representatives of Allied members and partners — Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine — located along the Vertical Transport and Energy Corridor, which aims to connect Alexandroupolis with Odesa and beyond, also intervened.

During the event, the strategic importance of the Corridor for regional stability, European security, and transatlantic cooperation was underlined, along with the crucial role of the European Union and the private sector in its implementation. Issues related to resilience, connectivity, and energy diversification were also highlighted.
