Travel Advisory for Travel to Greece with Greek Old-Type Identity Cards During the Summer Holiday PeriodTravel Advisory for Travel to Greece with Greek Old-Type Identity Cards During the Summer Holiday Period
Please be advised that as of 3 August 2026, Greek old-type national identity cards are no longer be valid as travel documents. Greek citizens who are still in possession of an old-type identity card are therefore encouraged to arrange, without delay, for the issuance of either a new-type Greek identity card or a Greek passport.
Applications for the new-type Greek identity card can be submitted exclusively in Greece at the competent offices of the Hellenic Police, following a prior appointment booked through the gov.gr digital platform:
https://www.gov.gr/ipiresies/polites-kai-kathemerinoteta/stoikheia-polite-kai-tautopoietika-eggrapha/id.
Greek citizens wishing to obtain a Greek passport may submit their application to the Consular Office of the Embassy of Greece in Vienna after scheduling an appointment through thee-Consular (e-Προξενείο) online platform https://e-proxeneio.mfa.gr/ .
Following consultations with the competent Austrian authorities, it appears that Greek citizens who possess only an old-type Greek identity card may, as an exceptional measure and only during the summer holiday period, be allowed to travel by air from airports in Austria to airports in Greece.
This exceptional arrangement is intended solely to enable travel to Greece so that the individuals concerned may obtain a new travel document (either a new-type Greek identity card or a Greek passport), thereby allowing them to return lawfully to Austria.
Please note, however, that passengers travel entirely at their own risk. The implementation of this exceptional arrangement remains subject to the final decision of the airline concerned, in accordance with its procedures for the verification and acceptance of travel documents.
For this reason, travelers are strongly advised to contact their airline well in advance of departure to confirm the applicable procedures and verify that their travel document will be accepted for boarding.
To avoid travel disruptions, Greek citizens are strongly encouraged to replace their old-type identity cards or obtain a Greek passport well before any planned travel abroad.
