Πρέσβυς κ. Δημήτριος Αζεμόπουλος
Ambassador Dimitris Azemopoulos was born in Athens. He studied
Law and subsequently Political Science (major: International and
European Studies) at the University of Athens. Both degrees were awarded
to him with "Summa cum laude''. He completed his postgraduate studies
at the University of London (LLM from London School of Economics) and
University of Paris II - Sorbonne (DEA). He is also holder of a
postgraduate degree from the University of Athens in the field of
International Relations (''cum summa laude'')
In 1987 he ranked first among 301 candidates / lawyers in the exams of the Bar of Athens.
In
1992 he ranked first in the final exams of studies at the National
School of Public Administration and in 1992 he joined the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs.
From early 1992 until end of 1995, he served in
the diplomatic cabinets of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the
President of the Hellenic Republic.
He then served as Counselor - deputy head of mission, in the Embassy of Greece in Warsaw (1995 - 1998).
From
February 1999 until October 2002, he served in Brussels as ''haut
fonctionnaire'' of the General Secretariat of the Council of the
European Union. He was responsible for the relations of the Council of
the EU with the OSCE and the Council of Europe. He was also responsible
for the cooperation of the EU member states in combatting terrorism.
In
November 2002 he was appointed member of the Cabinet of the EU
Commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou. Her portfolio covered the fields of
Employment, Equal Opportunities and Non-Discrimination. Subsequently, he
joined the Cabinet of EU Commissioner Stavros Dimas, responsible for
Environment.
From 2005 until 2007, upon his return from Brussels
to Athens, Dimitris Azemopoulos served consecutively in various
positions (Cabinet of the Deputy Minister for European Affairs, OSCE
Division of the MFA, Head of the Cabinet of the Director General for
International Organizations and Head of the Secretary General for EU
affairs).
In October 2007 he was posted as deputy head of the Embassy of Greece in Oslo, with parallel accreditation to Iceland.
From February 2009 until August 2014, he served as Consul General of Greece in Toronto.
In February 2016 Dimitris Azemopoulos was promoted to the rank of Minister Plenipotentiary (2nd order)
Upon
his return to Athens from August 2014 until October 2017, he served
consecutively as acting director of the Department for European
Countries, Director of Studies in the Diplomatic Academy and Director of
the Department of Personnel.
In October 2017 he was posted to Ottawa, as Ambassador of Greece to Canada, where he served for three years (October 2020).
In June 2020 he was promoted to Minister Plenipotentiary (1st order)
From
November 2020 until April 2021, he was appointed chief of campaign of
Anna Diamantopoulou in Greece's bid for the post of the Secretary
General of the OECD.
He was then appointed Director of the MFA Department for Training and Development of Human Resources.
From October 2021 until August 2023, he served as Diplomatic Advisor to the Minister of Tourism.
From August 2023 until December 2024 he served as Diplomatic Advisor to the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.
Ambassador Dimitris Azemopoulos has been awarded with:
- the Eagle of the Polish Republic,
- the Cavaliere dell'Ordine al merito della Repubblica Italiana,
- the Grand Commander of the Order of the Phoenix of the Hellenic Republic.
In 2021, Ambassador Dimitris Azemopoulos was the recipient of an Honorary PhD from the Deree - the American College of Greece.
During
his overall almost 9-year career in Canada (initially as Consul General
and subsequently as Ambassador), Dimitris Azemopoulos took innovative
action and was in charge of far fetching initiatives in the fields of
philanthropy, academic education, sports. The Greek Diaspora, the Press
as well as state authorities on many occasions honored him for his
dedication and inspiration while performing his duties.
