Permanent residents abroad

General Information

For information and clarification relating to the provisions of military legislation, visit the website of the Military Service – Military Legal Counselors (www.stratologia.gr) which is updated daily with all developments relating to military legislation and where as holders of gsis details (tax details) the person concerned can seek his enlistment notice.

In accordance with article 25 of Chapter D of the Law 3421/2005 as currently in force and other provisions “On the Military Service of Greeks” permanent overseas residents are defined as:

a. Those whose main and permanent residence has been in one or more overseas countries for eleven (11) consecutive years

b. Those who have been settled abroad for work purposes (live and work, as insured) for at least seven (7) consecutive years in one or more countries.

Permanent resident status may be lost by non-compliance with the required conditions.

Required Supporting Documents for Application under Law 5265/2026

If you wish to apply for a postponement of your military obligation as a permanent resident abroad, we would like to inform you that you may apply providing in photocopies all the necessary documents during your in-person appointment to our Offices, if you live abroad (in the U.K.) since the 1st of January of the year that you turned 16 years old (15 to 16 years old). Furthermore your parents had to live with you in the U.K. during the period that you were a minor and you wish to apply for.

For your convenience the necessary documents are:

- The documents that refer to you (passport, a military document that refers to you, school certificates/certificate of attendance which should indicate the period that you were attending to each school, College, University, if you have council taxes or utility bills, P60s and bank statements from the month that you became an adult up to the most recent month to your appointment).

The bank statements should indicate everyday expenses (e.g. supermarket, TFL ticket etc) that prove living in the U.K. For your convenience you may provide bank statements as follows: one month per quarter per year (e.g. January,April,July,October for every year) and the most recent month to your appointment. It is noted that the financial details aren't needed for the process and they may be erased / covered.

- It is noted that for the period that you were a minor and you wish to apply for, you should provide documents not only for yourself, but also for the parents who were living with you in the U.K. (e.g. passports' photocopies, P60s or employment history from HMRC or print out of National Insurance Record from HMRC, council tax or utility bills or certificate of living from the borough, bank statements-if they possess bank statements, if they can provide them and as far in the past as they can do it, as described above).
