Cultural Relations and Greek Community
Cultural relations between the two countries are at a good level, with increased activity in recent years, mainly within the framework of the organization of “Cultural Months” and “Cultural Years”, as provided for in the Greek-Japanese Action Plan for the promotion of Bilateral Relations. In particular, on the occasion of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s visit to Tokyo (January 2023), during which the bilateral cooperation was elevated to a Strategic Partnership, 2024 was proclaimed Greece-Japan Year of Culture and Tourism, in the context of which Greek culture was further promoted and showcased in Japan (see the full program of the Cultural Events of this special celebratory Year, in the News section of our site). Moreover, in 2024 Greece and Japan celebrated 125 years from the institution of formal bilateral relations, an anniversary that was celebrated by organizing a banner’s Exhibition presenting Greek and Japanese historical and diplomatic documents, both in Athens and in Tokyo.
The bilateral on cooperation on Educational Issues is based on the 4.3.1981 Education Agreement between Greece and Japan (Bill 1244/ Off. Gaz. A-45/1982).
In Japan there is a small community of approximately 500 Greeks. Most of them are Greeks that came to Japan for professional reasons or studies. There is also a limited number of Greek-Americans and Greek-Australians that live and work in Japan. There is no organized Greek Association in Japan.
