Alternatively, they candeclare the loss at their closest Greek Consular Authority. Attention: In accordance with the Community Code on Visas short term visitors to Greece (and to the Schengen area in general) must be in possession of a valid travel document. The Travel document’s validity shall extend at least three months after the intended date of departure from Greece (or the Schengen area in general), and it shall have been issued within the previous 10 years

Declaration of a Marriage solemnized in the United Kingdom

Only the Greek citizen is required to attend in person (if both parties are Greek only one of them is required to attend) in order to submit the following documents:

Application to declare a marriage: You are kindly requested to complete the application prior to your attendance at the consular office

Original Marriage Certificate issued by a British Registry Office duly legalised with an APOSTILLE stamp from the competent British Authorities. A translation of the British Marriage Certificate is not required. Please keep in mind that the registration will not be completed, unless the submitted certificate is  legalised with the Apostille stamp.

Valid passports or Greek ID card for each spouse. EU citizens may complete the declaration using their ID card. Non EU citizens are required to be in possession of a valid passport.

Upon completion of the declaration, the citizen receives a copy of the registered deed, which has already been sent electronically to the relevant municipalities. With the registration of the deed in the family file of the Greek citizen, the declaration is completed.

NOTE : Since 16/02/2024, according to Law 5089/2024 (Government Gazette A’ 27/16.02.2024), regarding equality in marriage, marriages between same-sex couples are registered retroactively from the date that they took place.

ADDITION OF SURNAME: In the case of a marriage declaration between two Greeks and if the spouses (or one of the spouses) wish to add the surname of the other to their surname, the personal presence of both is required in order to sign the relevant solemn declaration.

Fees: Declaration 10€ or equivalent in Sterling.
Copy 10€ or equivalent in Sterling.
Payment in cash or by UK issued debit or credit card.

For documents that authentication of the original signature is required, it is priced at 10 Euros for Greek/EU citizens and 30 Euros for third country nationals equivalent in Sterling.
