Candidatures
Greece in the UN Security Council
Greece was elected on 6 June 2024 as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-2026 term with the support of 182 states.
This marks the third time that Greece holds a seat on the Security Council, following the two-year terms in 1952-1953 and 2005-2006.
Greece is committed to working within the framework of the “Dialogue-Diplomacy-Democracy” nexus and will vigorously promote the priorities of its candidacy, namely the peaceful settlement of disputes, respect for International Law, Women, Peace and Security, Climate, Peace and Security, Children and Armed Conflict, and Maritime Security.
Greece in the Human Rights Council
Addressing the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva (March 2023), Greece presented its candidature for the UN HRC in the period 2028-2030.
Greece is convinced of the added value and effectiveness of a consensus-based approach regarding human rights, based on international law, and its aim will be to advance the HRC's vital work and to promote international synergy and dialogue with all relevant UN bodies and Member States.
There can be no peace if human rights are violated, as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights underline.
