Ambassador Ioannis Ghikas, Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva, delivered the following statement during the 52nd session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), on the Review of Estonia:
"Thank you, Mr. President,
Greece welcomes the delegation of Estonia to the 4th UPR cycle.
We welcome Estonia’s accession to the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women in 2025.
We also commend Estonia for promoting gender equality and equal participation, including by strategic policy initiatives, such as “Estonia 2035” and “Welfare Development Plan 2023-2030”.
Greece would like to recommend that Estonia:
1. Strengthen implementation of existing legislation prohibiting racial discrimination, access to justice for victims, and the investigation and prosecution of perpetrators, including by raising public awareness of the relevant role of the Chancellor of Justice.
2. Strengthen the Office of the Gender Equality and Equal Treatment Commissioner with adequate resources to effectively and independently fulfil its mandate.
3. Enhance accessibility and availability of social protection programmes and mainstreaming community services for persons with disabilities, including through strengthened coordination and cooperation among entities at the national and municipal levels.
We wish the delegation of Estonia a successful review.
I thank you.
