62nd Human Rights Council Session: Interactive Dialogue on High Commissioner’s annual report

Tuesday, 16 June 2026

Ambassador Ioannis Ghikas, Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva, made the following statement during the Interactive Dialogue on High Commissioner’s annual report:

"Greece aligns with the EU Statement and thanks the High Commissioner for his update.

Unfortunately, the global human rights situation continues to deteriorate at an alarming pace.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to flagrantly violate international law and the human rights of the Ukrainian people.

Regarding the Middle East, we call for restraint, the respect of IHL, which is also vital to address the violations of the human rights of the Iranian people. We hope that recent developments will lead to a lasting peace and an improvement in the human rights situation in the region.

In particular, the suffering of the Gazan people must end and unhindered humanitarian access must be urgently ensured. The Gaza peace plan should be implemented, with a view to advancing a viable two-State solution and lasting peace. We reiterate our call for the urgent and full disarmament of Hamas.

In Syria, an inclusive transition process and accountability are essential for recovery and reconciliation.

On Sudan, the international community must act decisively to end this horrific crisis and ensure accountability.

On Lebanon, an immediate cessation of hostilities, protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure is imperative.

The human rights situation in Afghanistan, Venezuela, Eastern DRC, and Myanmar remains unacceptable.

Addressing these challenges requires a renewed commitment to human dignity and the rule of law. We therefore welcome the launch of the High Commissioner’s Global Alliance and reaffirm our strong support for OHCHR and its efforts to fulfil its mandate independently and with adequate resources.

Thank you."
