Power of Attorney

Executive Summary

A power of attorney is a notarial document by which any citizen, who has legal capacity, is mentally competent, and over 18 years of age, appoints another person as their representative in order to carry out lawful acts and transactions, such as real estate purchases and sales, judicial, administrative and tax representation, representation before banks, etc. The legal basis for powers of attorney is Law 2830/2000.

Powers of attorney are drafted by a Greek notary public or a lawyer with knowledge of Greek law and are then sent electronically, in Word format, to the Powers of Attorney Department of the competent Consular Authority, prior to the principal’s appointment at the Consulate. It is the responsibility of the drafter to ensure that the full details of the attorney-in-fact, as well as the purpose of the power of attorney, are clearly stated in the document.

Overview

In order to sign the power of attorney, the principal must present to the Consular Authority a valid proof of identity, as well as a document proving their residential address. If the principal does not have knowledge of the Greek language, the presence of an interpreter at the time of signing is required. The interpreter is appointed by the principal, must provide an accurate translation of the content, and co-signs the document.

At the time of the appointment, the principal must bring the following documents:

  1. A valid passport or Greek national ID card.
  2. Proof of residential address (e.g. driver’s license, utility bill, mobile phone bill, etc.).
  3. A completed and signed application for a power of attorney.
  4. Proof of legal residence in the United States (e.g. visa, residence permit, U.S. passport).

The cost of the power of attorney depends on the length of the document (number of pages) and is as follows (payable in U.S. dollars):

• Power of attorney: €50 per sheet (1 sheet = 2 pages)
• Copies: €10 per sheet (1 sheet = 2 pages)
• Total cost: €60 per sheet
