Greece maintains an Embassy in London (with a Consular Section), a Consulate General in Manchester and six Honorary Consulates (Belfast, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Gibraltar, Glasgow, Glasgow, Leeds). For its part, the United Kingdom maintains an Embassy (with a Consular Section) in Athens as well as both Consular and Honorary Consular Authorities. Relations between the two countries have a significant historical dimension, dating from the Greek War of Independence to the two World Wars and up to recent Greek history.

Useful Information

The two countries cooperate closely, within the framework of international organizations and across the whole spectrum of their bilateral relations, with frequent exchanges of high-level visits, as well as consultations at official level.

The Strategic Bilateral Framework (SBF) signed in London in October 2021 at the level of Foreign Ministers, which provides for a wide range of cooperation, is of great importance for our relations with the United Kingdom. The SBF also forms the basis for the signing of the "Joint Vision" in February 2023, at the level of Defense Ministers, which aims to strengthen defense cooperation between the two countries.

The SBF is subject to annual review:

-The 1st Annual Review took place in Athens on 6 December 2022, between the former Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Varvitsiotis, and the British former Minister of State for Europe, Mr. Docherty.

-The 2nd Annual Review took place on 30 January 2024 in London, between our Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Alexandra Papadopoulou and Mr. Docherty.

-The 3rd Annual Review took place on 3 November 2025 in Athens, between our Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Alexandra Papadopoulou and the British Minister of State for Europe, Mr. Doughty.

With respect to educational-cultural relations, a bilateral educational agreement has been in place since 1951. The issue of the return of the Parthenon Sculptures in the British Museum remains pending, despite the shift in British public opinion in favour of the Greek position and the continuous efforts made by the Greek side. With regards to the expatriate population, Greeks in the UK (Greek and Greek Cypriots) exceed 350,000, most of them of second and third generation. It is estimated that more than 100,000 are from Greece and more than 250,000 from Cyprus.However, there are more than twenty Greek associations and expatriate organizations. The Hellenic Centre, founded in 1994, is of particular importance, since it hosts Greek activities, with an emphasis on supporting Greek artistic and intellectual activity.The presence of the Greek Orthodox Church is also strong, focused on the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain. In higher education there is a significant Greek presence at the teaching level. There are chairs of Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies at the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Royal Holloway, Birmingham, King's College and the London School of Economics and two Centres for Hellenic Studies at the Universities of Bristol and Reading. The Greek maritime presence and activity remains vital to the economic life of the UK. Despite the strong trend of relocating shipping offices to Piraeus in recent years, the number of Greek shipping offices in London is currently estimated at 75-80. In London, there are two day-schools (Kindergarten, Primary School, and High School) with a total of 190 pupils and a school at the Greek Orthodox Primary Academy, "Agios Kyprianos" with 454 pupils, while the Greek language and ancient Greek literature are taught at many British universities. In Greece, the British School of Athens has been active since 1886, with notable archaeological and research work. The cultural presence of the United Kingdom in Greece is promoted mainly through the activities of the British Council.
