Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yiannis Loverdos, visited Sweden from August 22nd to 25th, 2025, to attend the opening ceremony of the renovated St. George's Cathedral in Stockholm and to meet with members of the Greek community.
The ceremony, marking the completion of the interior restoration work of the Cathedral, took place on Sunday, August 24th, officiated by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, in the presence of numerous faithful and representatives of Greek community organizations, Ambassadors, and clergy.
Mr. Loverdos expressed the State’s gratitude to His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch for his continuous contribution to maintaining the unity of the Church and Hellenism. The Deputy Minister also thanked Metropolitan Cleopas for his decisive contribution to the renovation of the church and offered remarks at the presentation of a book by His Eminence Metropolitan Cleopas, which honored the founder of the Holy Metropolis of Sweden, Metropolitan Polyevktos Finfinis.
As part of his visit, Mr. Loverdos had the chance to meet at the Embassy with the President of the Federation of Greek Associations and Communities of Sweden, Moissis Nikolaidis, and members of the Federation's Board of Directors, to discuss issues concerning the Greek community. The Deputy Minister provided an extensive overview of the Strategic Plan for the Greek Diaspora, with a focus on the digitization of services for Greeks abroad. Mr. Loverdos also met with representatives of Parents Associations of the Greek Language Departments in Stockholm and visited the facilities of the "Hellenic Cultural Center”.
