Crisis Management Unit

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides assistance to Greek citizens abroad during emergencies, such as the deterioration of the security situation in a country/region, natural or man-made disasters or accidents.

In major humanitarian crises with international aspects, the Crisis Management Unit (CMU) is activated on a 24-hour basis and acts as a facilitator between the Ministry, the Greek diplomatic and/or consular authorities abroad and any other competent Ministry, body or service, as the case may be, in order to provide effective assistance to Greek citizens.

When emergencies occur within Greece and involve a significant number of foreign nationals, the CMU facilitates the communication between the foreign diplomatic missions accredited in Greece and the competent Greek authorities.

The CMU operates pursuant to Article 86 of Law 4781/2021, which regulates the function of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
