Minister of Foreign Affairs George Gerapetritis’ statement following the extraordinary meeting of the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (28.02.2026)

The Greek Government is closely monitoring developments in Iran and the wider Middle East.

Since this morning, we have been in constant contact and coordination with allies and partners to develop a common approach. Our priority and primary concern is the protection of Greek citizens in the affected areas. Emergency telephone lines at our diplomatic missions are already operational to assist all citizens.

I call upon Greek citizens in the region to remain in a secure location and to follow the instructions of our respective Embassies. If required, the Greek State and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have already prepared contingency plans for any necessary evacuation from the region.

I would also like to note that the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy is in contact with all vessels flying the Greek flag currently in the Gulf and is maintaining constant communication.

We are in a position to assure that the Greek State will, in this case as well, uphold a principled stance in support of the safety of all Greek citizens. Thank you very much.
