Vital Records
According to the new law of the Ministry of Interior (L.4674/2020), as of 01.01.2022, the drafting or transcription of civil registration records for Greeks abroad are directly recorded on the national «Citizens' Register» system, through the Greek Consular Authorities.
The Greek Consular Authority issues birth, marriage and death certificates, which have taken place in their jurisdiction.
With respect to the birth or marriage registration, the parties involved need to be physically present before the Consular Authority. Concerning death registrations, the physical presence of the declaring person or employee of the funeral office or any other person with legal interest, is required.
The supporting documents required by the Consular Authority in order to verify the identity of the applicant(s) as well as the identity of the person referred to the record are:
● Birth Certificate: ID/passport/signed application of both parents, as well as documentation of the birth and identity of the child by the competent foreign Authority.
● Marriage Certificate: ID/passport/signed application of both spouses, supporting documents declaring of attesting the marriage by the foreign Authority.
● Death Certificate: ID/passport or other type of identification, complete information regarding and certification of the death of the deceased, ID and signed application of the person declaring the death.
