"For Greece, the European family constitutes a shield of security, peace, democracy and cooperation", Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis stated today upon arrival at the EU General Affairs Council in Luxembourg, adding that it is important to send a European message condemning revisionism in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Alternate Minister emphasized that the European family is growing, as four months following the start of the war in Ukraine, Europe decides to grant Ukraine and Moldova, the countries under pressure from Russian revisionism, the status of candidate countries. "This means that we are flying the European flag. The European flag is gaining territories and ground", Mr. Varvitsiotis pointedly said.
In addition, the Alternate Minister underscored that efforts are being made to conclude the enlargement agreement in our neighbourhood, the Western Balkans, "where Greece has significant interests in seeing Europe gain even greater importance", he said. Responding to a reporter’s question, Mr. Varvitsiotis emphasized that it is important for Greece to border with European partners as well as a solution to be found between North Macedonia and Bulgaria in order to overcome all obstacles and give the green light for the first Intergovernmental Conference. "The European path is a path of compromise", he added.
Lastly, the Alternate Minister also sent a message condemning Türkiye’s provocative conduct, stressing from Luxembourg that "we are determined to condemn the revisionism in the Eastern Mediterranean caused by Türkiye's attitude".
