Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yiannis Loverdos carried out his first official visit to Cyprus from the 26th to the 28th August 2025, in order to participate in the Annual World Conference of Cyprus Diaspora, where he delivered a speech at the opening ceremony.
During his stay in Nicosia, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs was received by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, His Beatitude Archbishop Georgios of New Justiniana and All Cyprus, and the President of the House of Representatives, Ms. Annita Demetriou. He also held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr. Constantinos Kombos.
In his address at the World Conference of Cyprus Diaspora, Mr. Loverdos emphasized that this year marks 51 years since the Turkish invasion of 1974, which, in blatant violation of all principles of international law, resulted in the illegal occupation of approximately one third of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus. He also noted that for Greece, the resolution of the Cyprus issue and the reunification of the island remains a top national priority. He stressed that, in full alignment with the Republic of Cyprus, “we remain committed to the pursuit of a comprehensive, mutually acceptable solution, based on the the Bi-zonal Bi-communal Federation within the framework of the UN Security Council Resolutions. Furthermore, he mentioned that cooperation between Greece and Cyprus on diaspora issues is just one aspect of the ongoing enhancement of bilateral collaboration, which is now evident in all areas, as demonstrated by the institutionalized annual Greece–Cyprus Intergovernmental Summit, which this year will be hosted in Athens.
During his stay in Cyprus, the Deputy Minister visited military cemetery at the “Tymvos of Makedonitissa,” the “Imprisoned Graves,” and the Hellenic Force in Cyprus (ELDYK) “Lieutenant General S. Stavrianakos” Camp in Malounta, where he laid wreaths. Mr. Loverdos also met with representatives of Greek citizens residing in Cyprus.
