Interview of Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis on ‘Rai News’ with journalist Elisabetta Casalotti - main points (8 March 2020)

“Erdogan is using innocent people to blackmail Greece and the European Union,” Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis highlighted in his interview on Italy’s ‘Rai News’, with journalist Elisabetta Casalotti, warning of the risk of an accident due to the situation on the border.

Mr. Varvitsiotis also noted that Europe expressed its solidarity with Greece through the visit of the Presidents of the European institutions to Evros, but that there are countries that care more about their relations with Turkey than about the situation Greece is facing right now. He added that “Italy and Greece have the same problem: mass migration,” and that an effort is being made to reach common positions in the institutions regarding the revision of Europe’s policy on this issue.

Finally, he accused Ankara of using fake news. “Along with this crisis, we are also seeing the prevalence of fake news. Fake news produced by Ankara. They are saying that hundreds of thousands of people have crossed the border, that there have been casualties. This isn't true. We send this message to all sides. And there are Europeans at the border who can vouch for the fact that Greece is telling the truth, but the war via media is a new kind of war that we need to deal with,” he stated.
