Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yiannis Loverdos, met, on Thursday, May 7th, 2026, with the Ambassador of Australia to Greece, Alison Duncan, who presented him with the commemorative coin, issued by the Royal Australian Mint, on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, honoring the Australian soldiers, who fought alongside the Greeks during the Second World War.
The Australian Ambassador emphasized that the coin symbolizes the deep friendship and historical ties between Greece and Australia, forged through shared sacrifices and common struggles. She also highlighted the significance of the Battle of Crete in the collective memory and spirit of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC).
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs thanked the Ambassador of Australia for the initiative, noting that such actions further strengthen and highlight the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
