Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Venizelos’ statement following the extraordinary meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on the situation in Egypt (21 August 2013)

In response to journalists’ questions, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos stated the following after today’s meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council:

“Today’s meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council was substantial and critical, and in the end a European position was set out in the conclusions: a positive position that can contribute to overcoming the crisis and achieving peaceful development of the situation in Egypt, a country that is key to the wider region and to many major pending international issues.

The text of the conclusions, as a point of synthesis and balance, allows for Greece to promote its own initiatives in cooperation with other European countries.

All of this has added significance for us, due to the presence in Egypt of the Greek communities and the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria.”
