The discussion on Cyprus in a broader format was concluded here in New York, at the United Nations, under the auspices and initiative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Eight years after Crans-Montana and the subsequent stagnation with regard to the Cyprus Issue, it is extremely important that the Cyprus Issue is now at the top of the United Nations Secretary-General’s agenda, who has appointed a Personal Envoy in order to closely monitor developments.
We had a highly productive discussion. We undertook to assess the Confidence-Building Measures that had been decided in Geneva a few months ago. It was noted that four out of the six areas of action have been completed. Moreover, four additional measures have already been added, in order to continue this process of Confidence-Building Measures, which will create a conducive environment to achieving progress towards a more substantive discussion concerning a united Cyprus within the framework of the United Nations Security Council Resolutions.
The message of a united Cyprus is today more necessary than ever in a world plagued by civil strife, wars, and widespread intolerance.
It is of particular importance that the Greek government, in full alignment with the Republic of Cyprus, continues this major effort, our national objective, which is the reunification of the island.
