The Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union will address today three open wounds of the international security architecture: Gaza, Ukraine, and Sub-Saharan Africa, including the Sahel region and, in particular, Sudan.
With regard to Ukraine, we welcome the new proposal for a ceasefire. The European Union and Greece have consistently supported every effort aimed at halting hostilities so as to open a window of opportunity for peace. It is self-evident that any plan must receive the consent of Ukraine. It is of paramount importance that we uphold the territorial integrity and stand firmly against any form of revisionism. Last week, Greece, once again, stood by Ukraine, ensuring its energy sufficiency for the period ahead through major agreements concluded during President Zelenskyy’s visit to Athens.
With regard to Gaza, Greece played a decisive role both in the drafting and in the decision-making process leading to the adoption of the resolution at the United Nations Security Council. This is a significant window of opportunity which must not remain unutilized. Immediate action should be taken in order to secure long-term peace in the region. Naturally, the issue of reforming the Palestinian Authority will be discussed. The Palestinian Authority must have a leading role in the region following the completion of its reform process.
With regard to Sudan, where an unprecedented humanitarian crisis is currently unfolding, it is absolutely imperative that immediate and decisive measures be taken to put an end to all actions that contravene the Charter of the United Nations. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to hold extensive discussions and receive the views of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan. The situation is extremely critical. The European Union must assume a direct and active role in order to stop the bloodshed, end any humanitarian crisis, and protect population movements that could also trigger major migration flows.
Greece remains actively present in a critical geographical area, with structured diplomatic alliances and substantial diplomatic capital deriving from its participation in international organizations. It will continue to uphold International Law in support of peace and the prosperity of peoples.
Thank you.
