Announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the assumption of the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council by Greece as of May 1, 2025

On May 1, 2025, Greece will assume the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council.

According to the United Nations Charter, the Security Council is primarily responsible for maintaining international peace and security. During its monthly Presidency, Greece will have the opportunity to showcase its strong diplomatic footprint, its role as an honest interlocutor, and as a bridge between East and West, North and South, with international law and the United Nations Charter guiding its foreign policy.

Maritime security, one of the six priorities of Greece’s two-year term in the Security Council, will be the topic of our Signature Event, to take place in New York on May 20.

Topics of the Greek Presidency will also include the protection of civilians in times of war, "Women, Peace and Security" and "Children and Armed Conflict".

The war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East will be central issues of the Security Council meetings. Developments in the Western Balkans, the situation in Libya and Sudan have also been selected as main topics of discussion.

During its Presidency, Greece, an advocate for multilateral diplomacy, collective security, and the United Nations peacekeeping role, will collaborate with all Security Council member states to maintain and consolidate international peace and security, aiming towards a rules-based international security architecture.
