Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis meets with Greek MEPs (Brussels, 19 February 2020)

Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis today met with the Greek MEPs at the headquarters of the Greek Permanent Representation in Brussels.

Following the meeting of the General Affairs Council, Mr. Varvitsiotis took the initiative of briefing the Greek MEPs on the negotiations being carried out on the European Union’s new Multiannual Financial Framework for 2021-2027, which will culminate at Thursday’s Summit Meeting of the heads of state.

During the discussion, Mr. Varvitsiotis had the opportunity, in a climate of understanding, to brief the MEPs on the national positions and expectations, and he invited them to express their views and convey the climate prevailing in the European Parliament. The Alternate Minister underscored that the framework of the country’s objectives focuses on a more generous and development-oriented budget. He emphasised that, from the outset, Greece has supported the European Parliament’s proposal for the size of the budget. Mr. Varvitsiotis highlighted that it is important for the Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy to remain at the forefront of the budget, given that they comprise the heart of cohesion and the economic convergence of the European regions. These are the policies needed by countries like Greece, which were hit hard by the economic crisis in previous years. At the same time, Greece also supports the funding of new policies that will enable it to meet current European challenges.
