Greece's leading role in global shipping amid geopolitical uncertainty
Speaking at the 29th Economist Government Roundtable, Deputy Foreign Minister Harry Theoharis highlighted the strategic importance of Greek shipping, which constitutes the largest international transport fleet in the world. As he noted, Greek shipping remains resilient and adaptable in the face of global turmoil, supporting international trade flows and strengthening the stability of global supply chains.
Mr. Harry Theoharis stressed that global trade is undergoing profound changes, with the European Union seeking greater autonomy and strategic diversification in its trade relations. In this context, Greece is strengthening its cooperation with strategic partners, while establishing itself as a gateway between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Greek shipping, with its global presence, continues to play a key role in ensuring the resilience of European and global trade, particularly through the country's geostrategic position in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Tariffs, fragmentation, and geo-economic challenges
Referring to growing geopolitical and geo-economic tensions, Mr.
Theoharis warned against the consequences of unilateral tariff measures and the rivalry between the US - China. As he noted, imposing restrictions based on geopolitical criteria creates distortions in maritime transport -increasing costs, limiting fleet flexibility, and reinforcing regulatory fragmentation. Instead of tariff-based measures, our joint efforts should focus on positive incentives that will enhance innovation and promote the modernization of the shipping and shipbuilding industries.
Greek shipping as a reliable partner for the US
He also placed particular emphasis on the role of Greek shipping in trade relations with the United States. In 2023, Greece was the second most important partner in terms of ship arrivals at US ports, serving critical sectors such as energy and raw materials. The Deputy Minister stressed that Greek shipping remains a reliable and strategic ally in ensuring reliable and safe maritime transport for the benefit of the global economy.
