Foreign Minister Kotzias’ statement to ERT journalist G. Syriopoulos (Brussels, 14 March 2016)

Foreign Minister Kotzias’ statement to ERT journalist G. Syriopoulos (Brussels, 14 March 2016)After today’s meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, Foreign Minister Kotzias made the following statement:

N. KOTZIAS: Today we had the regular meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the European Union, and we discussed important foreign policy issues, mainly with regard to Iran, Russia, Libya, and the European Commission and French initiative for the Middle East.

We talked about – and, for Greece’s part, insisted on – the need to carry out an extensive dialogue with Russia, the results of which dialogue will be binding. Despite and objections or problems there are with regard to its policy, we cannot stop trying to be in dialogue and cooperation with Russia.

We said the same regarding Iran: that Iran is a state that looks forward to the development of its relations with the West, and with the European Union in particular. This is why we should capitalize on our capabilities, which I described as “rapprochement through change” – that is, to approach Iran so that we can develop our relations and change any conditions, political or social, that exist in these countries.

JOURNALIST: Mr. Minister, ahead of the Summit Meeting on the EU-Turkey agreement, the meetings you had on the margins …

N. KOTZIAS: It is natural, here at with the Foreign Ministers of the rest of the European Union, for us to have a number of meetings that will facilitate and prepare for the making of the best possible decisions on Thursday and Friday.
