With the participation of Alternate Foreign Minister Nikos Chountis and Alternate Interior Minister Tasia Christodoulopoulou, an Emergency Joint Meeting of Foreign and Interior Ministers convened in Luxembourg today, with Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos in attendance, in the wake of the deaths of hundreds of people in the Mediterranean.
The competent Commissioner’s proposals were accepted in principle by the Ministers of all of the member states, while the Greek delegation highlighted the need for emergency funding to enable Greece to respond to increased pressures.
The Greek side underscored the need for the burden of the repercussions of refugee and migrant flows to be shared by all of the members of the EU, stating that it awaits the elaboration of the Commission’s proposals, and stressing that Greece will continue its efforts to implement the national plan.
