In the context of his address at the “Thessaloniki Summit 2000,” Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis said, among other things, that “Turkey is no longer at a crossroads. Judging from its provocative actions and aggressive rhetoric, it appears to have chosen the path away from European values.”
More specifically, Mr. Varvitsiotis highlighted that the path Turkey has chosen is far from European values and the European way of dealing with things. The Alternate Minister pointed to Turkey’s provocative actions in the Eastern Mediterranean and its involvement in a number of open conflicts in the wider region, as well as to the relations it maintains with organizations such as the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas. As a result of this conduct, he said, Turkey has been isolated from major players in the region.
