Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis holds a teleconference with the French Secretary of State for European Affairs, Amélie de Montchalin (25 May 2020)

Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis today held a videoconference, in the context of the Greek Chairmanship of the Council of Europe, with the French Secretary of State for European Affairs, Amélie de Montchalin. Mr. Varvitsiotis presented the priorities, objectives and programme of the Greek Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers, which began on 15 May. He also noted that the Greek Chairmanship puts special emphasis on the French initiative for setting up an Observatory on the teaching of History in Europe, which it will promote through various actions and meetings.

Moreover, ahead of tomorrow’s teleconference of EU European Affairs Ministers, they discussed key European issues, with emphasis on the measures being taken on the European level to help the European economy recovery. More specifically, Mr. Varvitsiotis stressed that the recent French-German initiative for the European recovery from the coronavirus crisis constitutes a very important step in responding to the economic repercussions of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

The French Secretary of State for European Affairs thanked Mr. Varvitsiotis for the briefing and expressed her support for the main priorities and initiatives of the Greek Chairmanship.
