Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis holds videoconference with the UK Minister for European Neighbourhood and the Americas, Wendy Morton (12 November 2020)

Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis today had a videoconference with the British Minister for European Neighbourhood and the Americas, Wendy Morton. The discussion, which took place in a very friendly atmosphere, covered Greek-UK bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries in the context of the implementation of the Agreement on the UK’s Withdrawal from the EU.

Mr. Varvitsiotis stressed the importance of maintaining close relations with the United Kingdom following the latter’s withdrawal from the EU, and referred to the measures the Greek state has taken to safeguard the rights of British citizens residing in Greece. He also stressed the importance Greece attaches to the safeguarding of the rights of Greek citizens residing in the United Kingdom. He referred in particular to the matter of fees at British universities. He also stressed that Greece looks forward to the UK’s active participation in the 2021 celebrations of the bicentennial of the Greek Revolution. The Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs also briefed Ms. Morton on Turkey’s violations of international legality in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Ms. Morton welcomed the two countries’ close cooperation on safeguarding citizens’ rights after the expiry of the transitional period of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, underscoring the important contribution of Greek students studying at British universities.
