Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis today met, at his office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the German Ambassador to Greece, Dr. Ernst Reichel. The German Ambassador briefed the Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs on the priorities of the upcoming German Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which begins on 1 July.
The talks touched on issues of European interest, with a focus on the new European budget and the Recovery Fund. “The European Union must fully meet citizens’ expectations in responding to the pandemic crisis. It is a matter of credibility and certainty,” Mr. Varvitsiotis said in reference to the Recovery Package that is to be adopted. He also stressed that there has to be a creative and flexible approach to the use of the funding, with the aim of safeguarding social cohesion. The migration issue was also discussed.
Finally, Mr. Varvitsiotis agreed to take part in the ceremony the German Embassy is organizing to mark Germany’s assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1 July.
