Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis meets with the Ambassador of Italy, Efisio Luigi Marras (Athens, 25 September 2019)

Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis today met with Italian Ambassador Efisio Luigi Marras. During their discussion, which took place in a friendly climate, they confirmed the excellent level of bilateral relations, which are founded on friendship and trust between the two peoples.

More specifically, the focus was on European issues and the need to further strengthen bilateral relations. Special emphasis was put on the migration issue, which the Alternate Minister highlighted as a key issue impacting both countries. The two sides agreed on the need for a comprehensive approach to the handling of the increased migrant flows in the eastern and western Mediterranean, also stressing the European dimension of the problem.

Mr. Varvitsiotis also referred to Greece’s positions on the allocation of Cohesion Policy resources and to the Greek side’s desire to attract Italian investments.

Finally, in the context of deepening bilateral relations, the two sides agreed on the need to hold the 2nd Greek-Italian Intergovernmental Summit Meeting in the near future.
