Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis talked by phone today with the UK Under-Secretary of State for European Neighbourhood and the Americas, Wendy Morton, regarding the current developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Mr. Varvitsiotis briefed his interlocutor on Turkey's increasing provocations in the Eastern Mediterranean, which jeopardise security and stability in the region.
He also briefed Ms. Morton on the results of yesterday’s European Council videoconference and last week’s extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council, which was convened to discuss Turkey’s violations of international legality.
In this context, Mr. Varvitsiotis underscored that the European partners are showing full solidarity with Greece and Cyprus and have called on Turkey to immediately de-escalate the tension caused by its illegal activities.
Finally, the Alternate Minister stressed to the Under-Secretary that Greece is a peaceful country that pursues the peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue – but not under threats or blackmail – acting on the basis of International Law.
