Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis will open tomorrow, Thursday November 25, the proceedings of the Scientific Conference titled "1821-2021: Greece in the Mediterranean", being organized on November 25 and 26 by the Institute for Mediterranean Studies, the University of Piraeus, the University of the Aegean, the Ionian University and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. (G. Kranidiotis Amphitheater, Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
The Conference is being held in the context of the Conference on the Future of Europe and, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution, it aims to highlight the geopolitical, political, economic, environmental and cultural dimensions of Greece's role in the Mediterranean and its multifaceted relations with the Mediterranean countries over time, from the 19th century until today.
In addition to the historical dimension, the Conference also aims to record the political debate currently taking place within the EUMed 9 Group (France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Cyprus, Malta, Croatia and Slovenia), which Greece has hosted twice in recent months. Both in June, at ministerial level, with the participation of Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, and in September, with the participation of the Prime Minister, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, our country, holding the rotating Presidency of the Group, significantly expanded the agenda of the Euro-Mediterranean Dialogue and highlighted new, advanced aspects of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation.
In this context, the Conference focuses on crucial issues such as trade in industrial and agricultural products, merchant shipping, the demographic issue, migration and refugee issues, tourism, climate change, the marine environment and cultural exchanges with Mediterranean countries.
At the same time, as the work of the Conference is part of the Conference on the Future of Europe, which is coordinated at national level by the Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, the importance of the EUMed 9 Group and the role it could play in the Europe of tomorrow, on an ever-changing global geopolitical stage, will be examined as well.
