Announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the hosting of a seminar with the "Arolsen Archives" for Holocaust education (Athens, 05.10.2023)

On October 5, 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a seminar for Greek educational staff on the teaching of Holocaust issues at the "Yiannos Kranidiotis" Amphitheatre.

The event, titled "Prisoners in the Nazi concentration camps: research and education", was successfully organized in collaboration with the Diplomatic and Historical Archives Service, the "Arolsen Archives" of Germany, the Jewish Museum of Greece and the General Secretariat for Religious Affairs of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports. Approximately 25 teachers attended the seminar.

The "Arolsen Archives", located in the German town with the same name, have the sad privilege of possessing authentic Nazi archives containing documents of persons who were exterminated or martyred in concentration camps and forced labour under Nazism, as well as personal testimonies of survivors.

The conference was addressed by Ambassador Chryssoula Aliferi, who represented the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Victoria Peloni, who represented the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Peter-Alberto Behrens, who represented the "Arolsen Archives", and Zanet Battinou, who represented the Jewish Museum of Greece.

Among other things, useful educational tools were presented during the seminar, including digital ones, which were provided by the "Arolsen Archives" for teaching multifaceted Holocaust issues.

The need and the duty to promote respect for the Memory of the Holocaust, its preservation and their handing down to future generations was emphasized on the part of all participants.
