Today, the Hellenic Parliament ratified the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ), thus making Greece the third EU member state and the 22nd state internationally to ratify this important Agreement.
This milestone comes at a special juncture, ahead of the third UN Ocean Conference (Nice, 9-13 June), where a ceremony will be organized to allow States to deposit their instruments of ratification.
This Agreement, which was adopted by consensus in New York in 2023, constitutes a major step toward ensuring the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction.
At the same time, it is an UNCLOS implementing Agreement, confirming that UNCLOS remains the international legal framework governing maritime activities globally.
