Greece, a force for stability and security
In today’s critical geopolitical juncture, in the midst of complex international challenges and ongoing conflicts in the wider region, Greece is a pillar of stability and security. Our country is pursuing an active diplomacy and principled foreign policy, committed to international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes. With a strong international presence and an enhanced role, Greece has assumed its position as a member of the United Nations Security Council as of 1st January.
Recognizing the critical importance of the European Union's strategic autonomy, both for ensuring peace in Ukraine and for the long-term security of the European continent, Greece is at the forefront of efforts to strengthen collective European defense. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ proposals for increased fiscal flexibility in defense spending and the creation of a new defense funding instrument, are steadily gaining ground.
On the issue of Ukraine, Greece maintains a position of principle. From the outset, our country has condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and continues to seek a diplomatic solution in line with International Law -one that includes security guarantees, an active European role, and the participation of the United States. At the same time, we remain focused on security challenges in the Western Balkans, the Southeastern Mediterranean, and the Middle East.
Greece has an active presence in efforts to establish a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon and to restore stability in Syria. Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Gerapetritis, recently completed a diplomatic marathon in the Middle East and the United States with positive results. Our country is a reliable interlocutor for all parties, maintaining a strategic alliance with Israel and excellent relations with the Arab world. Greece provides humanitarian aid and medical care to injured children from Gaza and plays a leading role in ensuring free navigation in the Red Sea. Greece stands with Christians in the Middle East and supports an inclusive future for all ethnic and religious minorities in Syria.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of Greek diplomacy, in alignment with Nicosia, the Cyprus issue has returned to the forefront of the United Nations agenda. We strongly support efforts to resume the Cyprus talks, firmly committed to a just and viable solution, in line with UN Security Council resolutions.
Over the past six years, under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Greece has stabilized its economy, strengthened its defense and borders, and forged strategically beneficial alliances. Our country's international image has been upgraded. Greece’s election to the UN Security Council is a proof of its increased diplomatic capital. It is crucial not to disrupt this progress. We should remain steadfast on the path of responsibility and diplomatic outreach. We should safeguard political stability and Greece’s strong geopolitical footprint for the benefit of our country, Europe, and the world.
