Deputy Foreign Minister Kyriakos Gerontopoulos met at his office this morning with Irish Nobel Peace Laureate (1976) Mairead Maguire, who is carrying out a three-day visit to Greece, at the invitation of the Observatory for International Organizations and Globalization.
Ms. Maguire briefed Mr. Gerontopoulos on her activities for peace, with a focus on the missions she has carried out to the Middle East, and to Gaza and Syria in particular.
They also discussed the Cyprus issue, agreeing on the need to resolve the problem based on the UN resolutions. The discussion also covered the Palestinian issue, which is, as they ascertained, the key problem for peace in the Middle East.
Mr. Gerontopoulos briefed Ms. Maguire on his meeting in Evros with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who is carrying out an official visit to Thrace, and referred to His All Holiness’s initiatives for peace and the interfaith dialogue.
Finally, Mr. Gerontopoulos thanked Ms. Maguire for her visit, congratulating her on her extensive activities in Ireland and internationally.
Mr. Maguire was accompanied by the chairperson of the Observatory for International Organizations and Globalization, Panos Trigazis, and Observatory members Konstantinos Kalamvokidis and Alkis Farmakis.
