Deputy Foreign Minister Kyriakos Gerontopoulos met in Cyprus today, Monday, 25 August, with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Cyprus, Ioannis Kasoulides. During their meeting they discussed the developments in the Cyprus issue, the situation in our wider region, and the close cooperation on Hellenic Diaspora issues. The coincidence of views that exists on all national issues was reaffirmed. Messrs. Gerontopoulos and Kasoulides also agreed that Athens and Nicosia are factors for stability in the region.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Gerontopoulos visited the “Lt. Gen. Stampoulis” Hellenic Force in Cyprus (ELDYK) base in Malounta. After being briefed by the commanding officers, he laid a wreath at the monument to the fallen, toured the base facilities, and observed a military display.
Addressing the officers, NCOs and enlisted men, Mr. Gerontopoulos stressed that “every time I visit Cyprus, I feel greatly moved. I feel even more deeply moved when I am at the ELDYK bases, the soldiers of which spilled their blood defending Cyprus during the Turkish invasion. You should be proud of what you are doing for your homeland, and I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to you for that.”
